Winter Is Here!

12/31/2020 (Permalink)

a wet floor Here at SERVPRO, we want to be sure that you are prepared for any disaster that could come your way. If you ever experience a disaster, call our team.

Winter is upon us! With that comes the cold temps and the freezing pipes. Keep the faucets dripping to keep some water traveling through, making it harder to freeze, but there are other ways to prevent freezing or bursting pipes!

Keeping the pipes insulated is essential! If getting proper insulation is impossible before a storm, then wadding up newspaper and duct tape can provide temporary insulation around pipes. If the water pipes are in the garage, then keep the garage door closed whenever possible, to prevent freezing air from getting in and dropping the temps even further. Maintaining a consistent temperature in the home will also help, as well as, keeping the heat on when leaving the home for any extended period of time.

These are just a few ways to prevent freezing pipes, but if there is ever a surprise pipe burst, SERVPRO is there to help with mitigating the water and getting your home back to the way it was before, "Like it never even happened."

Property owners experiences a flood of emotions when a fire ravages their home or business.  Fear, uncertainty, stress and doubt about the future of the property and their livelihood can be overwhelming long after the fire has been extinguished and the smoke has cleared.

LOOK – LISTEN – LEARN

  1. Look for places a fire could start. Take a good look around your home and identify potential fire hazards.
  2. Listen for the sound of a smoke alarm. You only have minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds.  Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from home or business which everyone knows where it is.
  3. Learn 2 ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading to the outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Every Second Counts

  1. Consider escape ladders for sleeping area on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory.
  2. Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone for everyone in your home or business, with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
  3. Practice your fire escape plan during the day and at nigh time.

Fires are Preventable

  1. Immediately shut-off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to touch and lights that flicker.
  2. Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damage appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture.
  3. Never force a 3-slot prong plug into a 2-slot outlet or extension cord by breaking off the 3rd prong to make it fit into a 2-prong outlet or extension cord.
  4. Inspect and clean woodstove pipe and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.
  5. Make sure fire is completely out in a fireplace before leaving the house or going to bed.

BEST HELPFUL HINTS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE WINTER AND STORMS

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

ice The days are getting colder and it's time to get ready for the potential of winter storms. If the cold weather gets out of hand, then call our team.

  1. Ceiling fans are not just for summer: flip the switch to reverse the spin of the fan and turn on the lowest speed to blow warm air down from ceiling.
  2. Use energy from the Sun: During the day, open drapes and blinds to allow sunlight to help warm the house, land then close at night to hold in heat.
  3. Dress in Layers: Pack an extra pair of warm socks, blankets, wool sweaters and long-johns or coveralls in your car to keep warm.
  4. Keep a bag of clay kitty litter in car: If your car gets stuck in deep snow or slick ice, sprinkle kitty litter (non-clumping) at the base of your tires to add some traction to get moving again. Extra weigh in trunk will create added pressure on your tires, ensuring greater contact between your tread and the ground.
  5. Don’t smoke or drink coffee before shoveling: Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and can add extra stress to the heart.
  6. Learn to walk like a penguin: To walk safely on ice, walk like a penguin. Point your feet out, land hold your arms out slightly to your side.  Shuffle, land take short steps.
  7. Easy deicer: The night before freezing temperatures, rub half a potato over your car’s windshield.  The sugar from the potato creates a barrier over the window and prevents ice from forming, when you come out in the morning you will not have to scrape!  Simply rinse and wipe with your wipers when you get on the road.
  8. Gas Up: During cold weather months, it is good practice to keep at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle at all times.  Not only does it prevent you from being stranded, but it prevents any water in the tank from freezing, which can damage the fuel pump.
  9. Frozen locks: Squirt a little hand sanitizer on them. The isopropyl alcohol that kills germs also lowers the freezing point of water, and can melt the ice inside the lock within seconds.
  10. Grab a roll of duct tape and keep it in car: Not only does it fix everything, but you can use it as a fire starter – duct tape is very flammable and is a great tool to get a fire going in an emergency.  Don’t forget to have a lighter or matches in your emergency kit.
  11. Candles: will keep you warm in your car if you are stranded in car. Also, don’t forget to have a lighter or matches.
  12. No more icy walkways: Sprinkle leftover coffee grounds on your freshly shoveled walk or driveway to help melt the ice – it’s a natural and environmentally friendly way to add more traction underfoot.  Remember to wipe feet when going inside.
  13. Dry wet shoes: by stuffing them with dry newspaper to absorb the moisture quicker.
  14. Shoveling Snow: Spay shovel with non-cook cooking spray, snow will slide off easier.
  15. Winter Survival Kit to keep in vehicle: Flashlight, batteries, snacks, water, ice scraper, first aid kit, candle and lighter, phone charger, warm outer clothing and travel shovel.

Winter Checklist for Your Home

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

Snow Flake The winter months are quickly approaching, so if you experience any damages from snow or ice, call our team to help.

WINTER CHECKLIST FOR YOUR HOME

Winter weather can wreak havoc on your home if you are not prepared. Here is a list of tips and tricks for the winter months.

WINDOWS & DOORS

*Replace weatherstripping around doors and windows to prevent heat loss.

*Make sure your windows are securely locked to prevent cold air coming in or heat loss.

*Inspect windows for cracks, gaps or broken glass.  Replace or repair if needed.

GUTTERS

*Clean out any debris to prevent blockage of water flow and make sure downspouts flow away from house to prevent flooding or foundation damage.

*Make sure gutters are properly fastened.  Ice and snow can pull gutters down and away from home.

*Cleaning out downspouts help with ice dams.

DRAINS

*Cover outside faucets with an insulated cover if not frost free.

*Unhook hoses and drain them before putting them away.

HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING

*Cover air conditioner with a protective cover.

*Replace air filter in furnace.

*Check duct work in attic and or basement for any leaks.

*Inspect Chimney flue for cracks, creosote and soot buildup before starting a fire.  Also, check damper to see if it is working properly and not rusted, or warped.  This could help avoid a fire hazard.

ROOF

*Check for deteriorating flashing around vent pipes, chimney and sky lights.  Seal or replace where water could seep in.

*Check for any roof damage which could create water damage from snow or ice melting on roof.

Helping Mother Nature

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

Techs in a kitchen Our professional team is Here to Help® when Mother Nature is too much to handle. We know how stressful these situations can be.

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia are trained in the science of drying water damages using psychrometry. We follow industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages.

Psychrometry is essential in restoring water damaged structure back to its preloss condition. So, what is psychrometry? It is the study of humidity, air flow, and temperature, and their effects on various materials or simply, the science of drying. It helps us determine what state-of-the-art equipment will be used.

When we arrive at the water damaged area in your home or business, we will:

  • Inspect the building to detect migration of water, damage to materials, and condition of building.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor the materials through the drying process.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

Mother Nature can allow wet materials to dry in the correct conditions. However, nature can take too long and create secondary damages.

Call SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia to help speed up Mother Nature’s drying process with professional tools, equipment and knowledge.

Ways To Increase the Resale Value of a Property Through Restoration

10/9/2020 (Permalink)

Products and a vehicle in front of a home It is a fact: a clean, fresh smelling home sells faster, so that's why we are here to help realtors with difficult listings.

Customers might be concerned that undergoing damage and requiring restoration work might bring down the resale value of properties. These customers will want to know the relationship between restoration work and resale values of the properties.

Customers will be interested in learning what are some of the most cost-effective ways to raise the real estate value of their property. You can provide your insight as a leader in the restoration business to give your customers.

  1. Have your duct work cleaned out – It’s a good idea to start cleaning ducts before winter hits. This will help you out by ensuring that everyone in home stays healthy, but more so, they will also help you save money and to prolong the life of your duct system.
  1. Have your carpets cleaned – Brushing and vacuuming carpets, while being helpful, does not count as carpet cleaning. Vacuuming should be done twice a week to remove around 80% of the dirt and grime that accumulates in your carpets. Carpets should be professionally cleaned at least twice a year. Carpets cleaned professionally can remove the pathogens that hide within the fiber of your carpets. Allergens such as dust mites, bedbugs, and pollen can safely be extracted from the carpets.
  1. The potential dangers of removing mold yourself – We all are exposed to low levels of mold spores every day. However, molds can settle down and spread quickly through out your home. Exposure to certain molds can have effects on one's health. While DIYers sometimes attempt to tackle the problems in their home, mold is one that should be handled by a professional. Mold remediation requires the expertise of a professional with years of experience in safety and properly removing mold from your home.
  1. Odor Removal – Odors can be concerning when they linger and are tough to eliminate. Airing out the property and using air fresheners are masking agents. Lingering odors can indicate that there is serious damage that has been done to the property, such as water damage, mold growth, or smoke damage. Odors are usually an indicator of a larger issue. If you do not see it, but can smell it, then call your professional Restoration Company.

Protect Your Home From Water Damage

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Two SERVPRO workers setting up drying equipment When you don't know what to do, call your local SERVPRO to help get you back to preloss conditions.

It’s 5pm, and you get home from a long day at work. You decide to go down to the basement to grab something from the freezer to make for supper. You get to the bottom and, smush, water everywhere!

What do you do? Say some choice words and think “Ugh, not today.”

In this case, call your insurance agent to let them know you have a claim to call in, then investigate where the water is coming from.

Water damage does not always come from a heavy rain or a storm. It can come from a broken pipe, an overflowing toilet or sink, a crack in the foundation where water may have been pooling. Once you know where the water is coming from, you can begin the steps to stop it and mitigate the damage.

If the water is indeed coming from a pipe or overflow, it is important to know where your water shutoff is in your home or business. Emergency Ready Profiles are available, and it’s a handy tool to know where it is and how to shut it off.

Once that is done, immediately call a restoration and cleaning company, like SERVPRO. Unless you have a water shop vac and a few air movers and dehumidifiers, it may take you awhile to clean it and we want to avoid mold at all costs. Mold growth can happen within days of the water damage, hence why mitigation is essential. The restoration company can do moisture readings and determine what is needed to dry the space, and get you back to where you were before the damage. They can also determine if any drywall or insulation will need to be replaced or removed to dry. This all happens while working with your insurance. Any reconstruction that may be needed will need to be done by a company that specializes in that but luckily, SERVPRO utilizes a company that can do those things.

It never hurts to do maintenance on any pipes or check on the water shut off, but in the case that something happens and you have water, those are some steps to take towards mitigation!

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

7/21/2020 (Permalink)

A fire alarm Be aware of your own fire alarms to ensure your own safety. If you do experience fire damage then you can call on our team to help.

Smoke alarms save lives. This statement is only true, if they are properly installed and maintained. According to Missouri Department of Public Safety, about 540 children (14 and under) die each year from home fires and 80 percent of those children did not have working smoke alarms in the home. What can you do keep your family safe?

Fire alarms should be kept:

  • Every Bedroom
  • Every level
  • Don’t forget basement and attic

Fire alarms should be tested:

  • Monthly by pressing the test button
  • Replace batteries every year (daylight saving time)
  • Replace unit every 10 years

Some additional tips include a fire escape plan which should have two exits. It is important to practice dire drills and interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the property to ensure safety. When fire and water damage take control of your life and home, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia will help you take it back. We are here to help our neighbors.

How To Remove Graffiti

7/14/2020 (Permalink)

Vandalism and graffiti can be very upsetting and overwhelming. Vandalism and graffiti can range from relatively minor pranks to malicious destruction of property. Often simple acts of vandalism, like breaking a window, can cause significant water and mold damage if not addressed in a timely manner. Here at SERVPRO of Marshall, Columbia, And Sedalia, we have the capability to help with this property damage. We offer vandalism removal as part of our many services. Our removal product is placed on a brush and rolled/painted on with some sort of applicator to the affected surface. The product is power-washed off to remove the paint after the necessary dwell time. As you can see, there are two layers of paint, so the process would be repeated to remove the other layer. We can do a board-up which is done after a storm, fire or vandalism incident where the building is exposed. It is meant to prevent further damage from happening to the facility.

The Do's and Do Not's for Fire Damage

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

two servpro employees demonstrating the use of a dry sponge to a woman We offer several options for cleaning smoke and soot to help you get back to preloss conditions. We want you to know that we are "Here to help."

If you have fire and smoke damage to your property, home or business, it is hard to not start cleaning yourself. If this situation arises, please let our SERVPRO franchise professionals assist you. Here are some tips for those who experience fire and smoke damage in their home or business. The Do's are meant to help you minimize damage. Please keep movement in the building at a minimum.  Minimal movement helps keep particles from becoming embedded in carpet and fabrics. Make sure to wash your hands a lot and be cautious not to transfer or wipe soot onto something. It can make it damage the item more. If electricity is off, then empty fridges and freezers and prop doors open to prevent odors. It is beneficial to change your furnace/air conditioner filter, but don't let the system continue to run. Be certain to turn it off. The Don'ts that are stated should be left to professionals to help you get back to preloss conditions. Do not try washing anything yourself. You could further rub the soot into the item. Don't shampoo your carpet. We recommend that you take the time to talk to a professional first. Don't clean any electronics without contacting a professional. Do not consume any food or beverages that may have been affected by the fire, soot, or smoke. Additionally, do not use toiletries as they can also be affected by fire, soot, or smoke. Do not turn ceiling fans on, because this will stir up the soot residue. Our SERVPRO team is available for 24-hour emergency services.

The Different Types of Mold You'll Encounter

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold on a basement wall Mold prospers in warm, damp area and it will continue to spread with a continuous water source. Call our professionals to help with mold remediation.

There are different types of mold.  The most common are aspergillus, cladosporium and stachybotrys atra (also known as black mold). Aspergillus and Cladosporium are nontoxic to humans but it can aggravate allergy symptoms. It is important to note that not all mold is dangerous. In fact, it is all around us, but some mold should be removed by professionals. It is found in foods and in air conditioning systems. This is found as a black or green mold that grows in little dots in bathrooms, on painted surfaces, and in flexible air ducts. Black mold should be removed for safety reasons. Call our SERVPRO franchise professionals to remove molds such as black mold. This type of mold grows on building materials with a water source available. To prevent mold growth, make sure that water leaks are dried up quickly and humidity levels are maintained in your home or business. Mold thrives in warm, damp conditions. Our SERVPRO franchise professionals are certified to test for mold.  We do visual inspections, air sampling, as well as we have a bore scope that can go inside areas that are not normally visible to look for mold.  When air samples are taken, 3 samples are taken and sent in to be analyzed. The results take about 5 to 7 days to return.  If the air samples come back positive for mold then we will do further investigation to locate the source of the positive result of the air samples. Call us for pricing if you believe you have mold present and we will help you maintain your healthy home remediate mold.

The Do's and Do Not's for Water Damage

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

A truck filled next to air movers We are fully stocked for any amount of water damage. As franchise professionals, we can help you get toward preloss conditions.

Water damage can happen at any point for anyone, home or business, resulting in sometimes irreversible damaged property. These do's are only for clean water and do not’s pertain to sewage water. Sewage water is treated differently since it causes different damage and requires a different cleanup process. We, the team of SERVPRO of Marshall, Columbia, and Sedalia, know the importance of having professionals helping you properly dry out your home after water damage. With the right tools and pieces of equipment our SERVPRO franchise professionals can safely dry out your home or business and the contents within it. If the proper methods are administered then it minimizes the removal of materials such as drywall (this is also dependent on how soon the water damage is being dealt with. To minimize the damage, make sure to shut off the source of water and turn off the electricity. It is essential to remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and soaking up with towels. This is especially important for wood furniture. To ensure that more damage isn't sustained by the furniture, place aluminum foil in between furniture legs and the carpet. While these are good steps, your safety is important, so make sure to NOT enter a room with standing water since there could be a risk of electrical shock. We take safety very seriously and we want to ensure your safety along with our own. Make sure to disconnect all power first. It is recommended to NOT leave rugs and furniture upholstery wet against one another, because the fabrics have the potential to bleed between each other. It is important to note that you should not be utilizing your household vacuum to try and suck up any water. If these tips are followed, then damage can be minimized and you will be better prepared for help to arrive. Remember to stay safe and get excess water cleaned up professionally to minimize the chance of mold growth.

Building a kit for an emergency

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

an example emergency kit Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family’s needs change and make sure to replace expired food.

After an emergency, it may be necessary to build a kit that can last up to 3 days. We know how stressful unexpected storms can be and we want to help you prepare for any scenario.   To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. It should be noted that the supplies in a kit can be different based on your own personal needs, but the list recommended by ready.gov is a great place to start.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

You can use ready.gov for additional kit supplies ideas as well as how to maintain your kit and where to store it. Again, we want to help you prepare to weather any storm. If storm damage ever damages your home, you can call on SERVPRO of Marshall/Columbia/Sedalia to be there to help.

SERVPRO professional cleaning off soot from a wall Fires are often unexpected, and we want to create peace of mind as we are able to help get the property back to preloss conditions.

The first 24 hours after fire damage make the difference between restoring versus replacing the property. SERVPRO of Marshall/Columbia/Sedalia provides a timely response with mitigation services ranging from smoke and soot removal to contents claim inventory and document restoration. We offer a large amount of options in the case of fire damage. We can either utilize a dry or wet technique to completely remove soot off of surfaces like the walls and ceiling. Additionally, media blasting is used soot, mold, or paint removal. It is done by forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material to smooth the surface. Lastly, thermal fogging recreates the act of penetrations and follows the same path of the smoke from a fire to deodorize. It is estimated that up to 50% of businesses that close due to a disaster, such as a fire, never reopen. Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them have a preparedness plan in place. Whether it’s a home or business, SERVPRO is a lead in fire damage response and can help you quickly get the property back.

Do you Know How to Turn Off Your Water Supply?

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

We offer a no cost assessment of your facility and provide property details such as shut-off valve locations.

The amount of water that can leak from a 1/2-inch pipe is about 50 gallons per minute. If the pipe breaks and is left unattended for up to 12 hours, you could have up to 36,000 gallons of water damaging your business. To gain some perspective, a 20 X 40-foot pool (6 feet in depth) holds about 36,000 gallons of water.

Time is of the essence to shut off the water to your property. Review these helpful tips before water strikes:

  • Main shut off valves are usually located by the entrance of the water in the commercial building.
  • You will usually find a water meter box close to the street, as well.
  • If you are unable to locate your main water shut off, reach out to your local water department.
  • Once found, make it a point to let employees know the main shut off location(s).

It is always best to be prepared and SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia is here to help. We are here when the unthinkable water damage occurs and will get your business back to normal.

The Water You Don't See

1/16/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia is Here to Help take care of the water you don't see.

When you discover a water damage in your home or business, do you know where the water has traveled?

Water travels. It does not just stop on the surface where it is more obvious. It will travel from the carpet into the padding and make its way to the subfloor. Water can travel under the baseboard and climb the drywall. The drywall can soak up the water like a sponge.

This is why it is important to hire professionals to take care of your water emergency. SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia will inspect and test the premises to determine the extent of the damage and how far the moisture has traveled. Our team wants to ensure proper and complete restoration, so you can go back to your normal lifestyle.

Winter Ready Business

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

Get back to business quickly when winter strikes your property.

It may be hard to believe, but winter is right around the corner. In Mid-Missouri we can experience ice, cold winters with sleet, snow, ice, and damaging winds. We may not be able to control Mother Nature, but we can take action by getting the property winter ready with these precautions.

  • Check property for downed tree limbs and branches. Winter conditions could cause branches to fall causing damage to property or person injuries.
  • Inspect roofs, water pipes, and gutters. Clear gutters of any debris from the fall to prevent a damming effect. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building.
  • Inspect walkways and parking lots for proper drainage. This could alleviate a potential flood and/or slip hazard.
  • Entryways, handrails, and stairwells should be checked to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Post caution signs where water may be present and install mats or non-slip surfaces in the dangerous areas.
  • Protect pipes from freezing. Allow water to drip when temperatures go below freezing. Leave cabinet doors open to circulate warm air, if pipes are under them. Consider shutting off water to outdoor faucets and ensure they are properly drained.
  • Emergency Ready Profile. Contact SERVPRO for a no-cost assessment of your facility. It provides you with a plan to get back to business faster following a disaster.

Make sure your business is ready for the bitterly cold weather that may be ahead. If winter weather strikes, SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia are Here to Help.

Create a Storm Safety Plan

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

Severe storms leaving you with a water damage? Contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia.

Do you have a storm safety plan for your home and/or business?

Even though severe weather tends to hit Mid-Missouri during spring and the early summer months, severe weather can strike at any time. Since, the weather conditions change in October, we can experience severe weather outbreaks.

Our area has even experienced tornadoes in October. October 29th, 2004, tornado damaged homes in Saline and Pettis counties. According to ABC 17 news, there were 2 tornadoes in October 2007. One traveled through 4 Mid-Missouri counties.

It is best to keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for storms.  One great way to be prepared is have a storm safety plan in place. Create a written plan and go over it with everyone in the family or at work. Designate an emergency meeting area near the home or place of work, in case you get separated during the storm.

Don’t forget to designate an emergency contact person. Choose a friend or a relative out of state, so they may not be experiencing the same disaster. Teach all adults and responsible children the locations of water, gas, and electric shut-offs can decrease your risk of additional damage and increase your safety.

If a severe storm occurs during this fall season and leaves you with water damage, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia is Here to Help®. We understand the unexpected can happen at any time.

Helping Mother Nature

9/2/2019 (Permalink)

When you experience a water damage, contact your local professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia.

Our Restoration Beginning

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia is Here to Help.

Norma and Don Rutter opened SERVPRO of Marshall in June of 1984. Phil worked for them for a year before he and Rebecca bought their first franchise in January of 1994. Later in 1999, they purchased their second franchise, opening SERVPRO of Columbia. SERVPRO of Sedalia was later purchased, but was serviced by them, since 1984.

Believe it or not, Phil went across the Missouri River on a boat with air movers and dehumidifiers, during the flood of 1993. He made a risky trip to help his customers. Phil and Rebecca are proud to serve and be a part of the community. Helping our neighbors get back to their homes and businesses after a fire or water damage is why we are Here to Help®.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Can you PASS?

Imagine, a fire has just started in your home or business. It is contained, oxygen has not been depleted, and the room temperature has only slightly increased. Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Your adrenaline may be pumping when a fire occurs, so knowing how to operate one before is best.

Using an acronym, like PASS, will help in memorizing how to properly operate a fire extinguisher.

  • PULL the pin.
  • AIM low, pointing the nozzle at the base of the fire.
  • SQUEEZE the handle.
  • SWEEP from side to side at the base.

Remember, safety is always important. Evacuate immediately, if…

  • The fire is not contained, smoke is feeling the room, and the temperature is hot.
  • You have the slightest doubt of your ability to fight a fire.
  • The extinguisher is empty and the fire is not out.

SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia have the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home or business to pre-fire condition.

Three Types of Water in Water Damages

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia.

To ensure a proper cleanup of a water damage. The type of water must be determined.

Types of Water

Clean Water (Category 1)

Clean water is when the water originates from a sanitary water source. Examples of category 1 water can include: broken water supply lines; tub or sink overflows with no contaminants; and falling rainwater. It should not pose a substantial risk if exposed to water. Clean water can become gray or black water, if it is left untreated.

Gray Water (Category 2)

Gray water is when the water is slightly contaminated.  Examples of category 2 water can include: discharge from dishwashers or washing machines; overflows from washing machines; and overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine. It has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed. Gray water can become black water, if left untreated.

Black Water (Category 3)

Black water is highly contaminated and can contain fungi, bacteria, chemicals, or other harmful agents. Examples of category 3 water can include: sewage; flooding or any type of natural disaster. It can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed. Blackwater should always be handled by the professionals.

Ice Dams in Marshall, Sedalia, & Columbia

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Demonstrates how ice dams form when snow begins to melt and temperatures are at freezing or below.

Ice dams form when:

  • Snow is present on the roof.
  • Temperature is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit on higher portion of the roof.
  • Temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit on lower portion of the roof.

Snow melts down the roof and freezes once it reaches the cooler portion of the roof. The dam grows from the melting snow and water begins to back up on top of the ice. The water tries to find a way to escape and back-flows under the roof’s shingles and into the structure’s interior.

Ice dams can cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and other areas of your home. If your home or business has been affected by winter damage, call SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia. We are here to help those in our communities.

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

When storms hit the area, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia is Here to Help®.

Watch:  Be Prepared! This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. The watch area normally covers numerous counties. They are typically issued for a duration of four to six hours. During the watch, stay informed, review safety rules, and be ready to act if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.

Warning:  Take Action! This is issued when either indicated by radar or reported by spotters. A warning typically covers the size of a city or small county. They are typically issued for a duration of one hour. People in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance warning. Lightening is not a criteria for issuing a severe thunderstorm warning.

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Have you discovered mold in your home or business? Here mold has been found behind drywall.

When a water source (leaky roof or plumbing) is introduced to a home or business, it can quickly become infested with mold. Mold can spread throughout a property in 48-72 hours. It has the potential to produce allergens and irritants that may cause additional health effects.

When you suspect mold in your home or business, SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia can inspect and assess your property. If mold is discovered, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to handle the situation.

Mold exists almost everywhere, including indoors and outdoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Read over the following mold facts:

  • Mold spores thrive on moisture and can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float in the air. They can enter your home or business through AC/heating systems, doors, or windows.
  • The source of water or moisture must be addressed before the remediation can start. If not, the mold can return.
  • What’s that smell? Mold can produce a musty odor.
  • Higher than normal indoor humidity can aid mold growth. It is best to keep humidity below 45 percent.

Have you experienced a sewer backup? Contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia to make it "Like it never even happened."

Sewer Backup—What is It and Am I Covered?

A sewer backup occurs when sewage from sanitary sewer lines back up into homes and businesses through drain pipes. Backups create damage to the structure of the property, contents, and can create health hazards.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, most homeowner and business insurance policies do not cover sewer backup. Typically, a specific sewer backup coverage needs to be added to your policy. For most insurers, this is a nominal cost on your annual insurance policy.

There are several causes for a sewer backup to occur in your property. Some include:

  • Blockages from Tree Roots
  • Sanitary Main Blockages
  • Aging Sewer Systems
  • Combined Pipelines

What can you do to help prevent backups?

  • Dispose of grease and paper products properly
  • Cut back tree roots periodically
  • Replace your line with new plastic pipe
  • Correct any illegal plumbing connections

Did your heating equipment cause a fire in your home or business? SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), half of home heating related fires occur in December, January, and February. Whether you are using the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable heater to keep you warm this winter, take these precautions to prevent a fire in your home or business.

Safety for Heating Equipment

  • Keep heating equipment three feet from children, pets, and anything that could burn.
  • Do not heat your home with your oven.
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Heating equipment and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Always turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

If your heating equipment causes a fire in your home or business, call SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia. We understand how devastating a fire loss can be and how it can make your home or business unlivable or unsafe.

Winter Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes Bursting

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia can respond faster to your frozen water pipe disaster.

The temperatures have been dropping and the winter weather is here.  When the temperatures go below freezing level, your property is at risk for frozen pipes, which can create a major disaster in your home or business.

Be Prepared

  • Know where your water shut off is located, in case of a frozen water pipe burst.
  • Insulate exposed pipes in your home or business, especially if they are in unheated rooms.
  • Open bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors during cold spells to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • During extremely cold weather, keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets. Running water is less likely to freeze.
  • Consider shutting off outdoor faucets and open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it completely drains and the inner valve is shut off.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.
  • If you plan on being away from your property for an extended period of time, leave the heat on and set the thermostat to at least 55°F.

Discovered Frozen Pipe

  • First sign of freezing is reduced water flow from a faucet.
  • Keep the faucet open when treating frozen pipes.
  • Apply heat to the frozen sections using a heating pad, hair drier, or another safe heat source. Do not use an open flame device.
  • Check additional pipes and faucets for freezing.

When a Pipe Bursts

  • Shut off the water at the main valve.
  • Call your local restoration professionals, SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia.

A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. If winter weather causes water damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO® of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia. We are available 24/7/365 and are ready to restore your property to preloss condition.
